Typical Questions

1.  Where will I hunt?  You will be hunting in Portage and/or Waushara County, Wisconsin.  During Archery and Gun Season you do not have to designate a county.

2. When do I need to get there?  You should plan to arrive for your hunt the day before it is scheduled to begin.  I will show you the farm(s), stands, and property lines at that time.

3. What time zone is Wisconsin in?  Wisconsin is in the Central Time Zone.

4. Do I have to wear hunter orange? YES, Wisconsin requires both hat and vest for the gun season.  NO orange is required for the Archery Season. I recommend a Scent Lock system on my property.

5. Can I bring my own stand?  Yes you can.  It is recommended that you bring a climber and a lock-on if you have them both.  Jw Outfitters does have many stands already placed including climbing, lock-ons, and also pop-up blinds and Two Seater ladder stands.

6. Is there a place to buy hunting equipment if I need it?  Yes, there are several places within 15min where you can find a wide variety of hunting equipment, including:  Wal-Mart, Bucks N bulls archery and may other local sport shops.

7. What do I do if my deer runs off the property on which I'm supposed to be hunting?  First of all, do not cross any property lines.  Call me and I will contact the other land owners involved.

8. Can I bow hunt during gun season?  There is NO bow hunting on my property during the Gun season.

9. Can I use my bow tags for gun season?  NO, the tags are not interchangeable.  You must use bow tags during bow season and gun tags during gun season except for Muzzleloader.

10. How many deer can I harvest?  You are permitted to harvest one antlered deer in bow season and one antlered deer in gun season, depending on the tags you have purchased.  The number of antler-less deer you can harvest ONLY depends upon the number of antler-less tags you have purchased.

11. When do I tag my deer?  Deer must be tagged immediately upon harvest.  When you tag your deer, BE CAREFUL!  Tags have been known to tear off in transporting the harvested deer from the field to the vehicle.

12. Do I have to check my deer into a check-in station? YES, I will take you to a Deer registration station.

13. How long will we hunt each day?  Be prepared to hunt all day during the pre-rut and rut.  Bucks will be cruising from daylight to dark.  This is what I recommend but I will leave it up to you and the amount of time you would like to spend in the woods.  All locations are close to lodging location.

15. Any other tips for hunting Wisconsin deer? Grunting, rattling, and decoys during pre-rut and rut can be very effective.  Be ready to hunt long and hard.  Make your own luck!  You can't harvest a deer sitting at the lodge.  Try not to move around too much.  You have multiple days to hunt. Don't try to move with the deer, as too much movement could spook the deer off the farm completely. DON’T TRY TO GUIDE THE GUIDE, I am doing all that I can to make sure you get the trophy buck that you came to shoot, I can’t control mother nature but trust in my advice on locations.

16. What do I when i shoot a buck?  First thing you do is contact me Joe wheeler, i will come to your location and help you track your deer depending on the shot you made and location, i like to give the deer a hour to pass.
